Water Conservation
September 18, 2015, Cincinnati.com reported that authorities that monitor the health of the river described “it is the worst toxin bloom in the history of the Ohio River” (Blackmore Smith, 2015). Knowledge of such events and understanding the cause is seen as a necessary ingredient for change (Frick, Kaiser, & Wilson, 2004). It was found that action related knowledge and effective knowledge directly influence conservation behavior (Frick, Kaiser, & Wilson, 2004).
People must believe they have some kind of control over the situation and take ownership. They must believe they are empowered to make a difference (Swaisgood &Sheppard, 2010). If community members see their role in water conservation as one having an impact, they are more likely to adopt that behavior. Members of a community consist of both young and old. Children are part of a community and grow up to become leaders and decision makers within the community.

This two part unit was developed to educate (third through fifth grade) elementary students on watersheds. Part one, students look at how water is captured and transferred throughout a home watershed system. The student observed structures found around their school and home. Using the engineering process, students design their own home watershed with the primary goal to capture water.
In part two, students take their home systems and engineer a community watershed. Students incorporate structures that minimizes runoff and prevent pollution. After completing this activity, students create grid maps of their community"s watershed.
